- Today is the 15oth birthday of Anton Chekhov. Also Anna Bronte, Benjamin Franklin, Al Capone, Muhammad Ali, Andy Kaufman, and a bunch of other people were born on January 17th.
- Emma Straub (and her upcoming book release on January 27th) gets a pop in the New York Post.
- Finally! The best beards in literature and the best beards ever sported by writers. Why did this take so long? (Thanks 3:Am Magazine for the tip.)

Funny, when you click the link for Chekhov it says he was born 29 January. Yesterday’s date is only true after the Gregorian calendar, Wikipedia tells me. So I guess you can post this one again in a couple of days.
At first, I was pretty confused: Chekhov’s 150th birthday and the newspapers write nothing about it.
I guess it’s a good thing we do everything by pre-October Revolution standards.
But yes, you’re right. I looked and apparently the website I was looking at was created when there was still a tzar, and they said yesterday was his birthday. I’m not sure if it was his original birthdate, or if it was just poor checking on my part. Either way, we have something to talk about in eleven days.
I’m not sure about the pre-October Revolution, but I know that tzarist website experience. Last time I ended up on a 12th century website created by Peter Abelard, it was horrible: all that use of frames and stuff.
