I will hopefully do many great things in my life, and if I can somehow do enough to earn such a fantastic obituary as the late travel writer Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor had written for him by the BBC, then I will smile down from heaven and say, “You know what?  I lived a damn good life.”

Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor, who has died aged 96, was both a man of action and an intellectual.

That’s really all you need to say.
