Last fall, we wrote about the debut of Xylouris White, a duo featuring Dirty Three drummer Jim White and lute player George Xylouris. This week brings with it the news that they have an album due out next month, titled Goats and produced by Guy Picciotto. There’s a good piece about the duo by Sarah Larson at The New Yorker now; can you argue with something titled “Post-Punk Lute”? I can’t.
As with White’s work with Dirty Three, there’s an impressive tension in this duo’s songs between the melodic and the cacophonous. There’s also the unabashed pleasure that comes from hearing two monumentally-skilled musicians gelling perfectly with one another. Until the album comes out next month, there are a number of excellent live recordings available to tide us over.
