Call for Submissions

New Hampshire Medevac unit provides necessary service to Iraq

Words After War and Vol. 1 Brooklyn seek submissions for fiction stories and nonfiction essays (no longer than 2500 words) that engage topics of disability, illness, injury, caretaking, and healing in veterans and military families. We are looking for powerful storytellers that evoke vivid and meaningful experiences of the body via the written word. The winning author will join three other established writers—on-stage, virtually, or by proxy—for a night of storytelling dedicated to service members, veterans, and military families at Housing Works Bookstore in New York City on February 25, 2015.

Writers and editors from both Words After War and Vol. 1 Brooklyn will help coach the author of the winning essay through the editing process for possible publication on the Words After War vertical on Medium.com. Not only is this a valuable opportunity for emerging writers to expose their work to a larger audience, but it is also a critical invitation for the broader public to participate in ongoing conversations about health and the military experience.

Writers should submit work in document (.doc or .docx) form, along with a brief biography and any relevant links to info@wordsafterwar.org, no later than January 15, 2015.

Words After War is a literary organization designed to bring veteran and civilian writers together to examine war and conflict through the lens of literature. Through high-quality literary programming, we provide veterans and civilians with the tools they need to tell their stories.

Vol. 1 Brooklyn engages and connects the literary-minded from Brooklyn and beyond by offering free cultural programming and long and short form content. Vol. 1 seeks to motivate communities to explore and experience new writers, artists, musicians and projects they consider vital.
