I’m not going to say Hair Lit is the most necessary anthology of short stories to come out in 2012 because our own Tobias Carroll is in it. I also won’t talk of its greatness due to stories by favorites like Roxane Gay and Leni Zumas. What I will say is that it is full of stories inspired by hair metal and it has one of the best covers I’ve seen all year. For those two reasons alone I’m beyond […]
Quotable: The Poet and the Rockstar
“Mr. Tyler told Mr. Muldoon that he wished he had become a poet because he would have remembered more. “I don’t remember anything, man,” he said. But, he countered, he would have gotten laid a lot less.” – Mike Miller of The Observer recounts hanging out with Steven Tyler and Paul Muldoon backstage at an Aerosmith concert. Ain’t That America: Matt Robison’s Random Calls Across America
Over at The Morning News, Matt Robison has been making phone calls to folks all across the country and asking them what’s new in their town. He gets news and anecdotes from folks like P.J., who works at the Brilliant, Alabama post office (but actually lives a half-hour away in Winston County) and tells Robison that: Probably the most exciting thing happening lately, P.J. says, is the closure of Main Street for the past few hours. “They’re, uh”––his voice strains […]
Everyday is Like Sundae
In very necessary things: Today is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day. Although there is plenty of dispute over where the ice cream sundae originated (note: not the hot fudge type we’re supposed to celebrate today) we do know for sure that there is one good quote which applies to literary trolling thanks to Kurt Vonnegut: “Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and […]
Making an Owen Pallett Comic
Our love for Mr. Pallett stretches back a few years, going well beyond the 2010 release of Heartland. We certainly loved him long before he helped usher in our Band Booking series early last year, and if he continues producing songs as gorgeous as the ones off his last LP, we will probably always love Owen Pallett.

This is officially the Jesus of all soundtrack rereleases. Follow Vol. 1 Brooklyn on Twitter, Facebook, Google + and our Tumblr.
Just Going to Watch the Rain and Listen to This Track by Kindness
I know it might seem a bit tacky to repost from a press release, but it’s hard to ignore something described as, “a dream alliance of Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and Afrika Bambaataa circa 1985.”
