This year has brought with it news that Lynne Tillman has recorded an album. Between this and yesterday’s news of a Barry Hannah LP, it’s apparently the season for listening to the works of iconic writers on your turntable. Tillman’s LP, What Gets Kept, is out now on Penny-Ante Editions, and there’s a release party for it tonight at Printed Matter. You can hear “Home Sick” below.
Silhouettes and Motion and The Haunting Cover of Lidia Yuknavitch’s Latest Novel
Lidia Yuknavitch’s books are often thrilling, taking risks and veering in unexpected directions. Her memoir The Chronology of Water is a searing, powerful account of one writer’s evolution; her recent novel Dora: A Headcase riffs on Freud’s case studies, but does so in a modern world where celebrity culture abounds. Her forthcoming novel The Small Backs of Children, due out in July, continues with her explorations of art and perspective, with a narrative rooted in the aftermath of war. Needless […]
Sean H. Doyle’s “This Must Be The Place” Gets a Sun-Drenched, Sinister Cover
It should go without saying that we’re very excited about Sean H. Doyle’s This Must Be The Place, which will be out on Civil Coping Mechanisms in May. Its cover abounds with delirious, sun-drenched color: it would almost be blissful, until you notice the skulls in the background. Ominous? Most definitely.
When Pulitzer Prize Winners Converse
If you’re in New York right now, you’ve probably noticed that it’s a particularly cold day outside, and the weekend promises to bring with it equally unenticing weather. Why not spend some time listening to two outstanding writers discuss a host of topics–by which we mean this conversation between Toni Morrison and Junot Díaz that took place a few years ago at the New York Public Library. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to edit Muhammad Ali, all your questions will be answered.
Joseph Mitchell, Excerpted
It is a daily paper, but owing to some peculiarity in the delivery of second-class mail in New York City it arrives at my apartment house every third or fourth day in batches of two or three or four issues, each issue tightly rolled and tightly wrapped in a brown-paper wrapper, and when I open my mailbox and find a batch waiting for me I am almost as glad to see it as I was during my first year or […]
Eric Nelson’s Forthcoming Collection “Leverage” Has a Trailer
It should come as no surprise that we’re fans of the writing of Eric Nelson. We published his short story “A Drink Among Friends” a few years ago; more recently, he co-hosted over twenty episodes of the Almost Live at Mellow Pages podcast. Next year, Leverage, his second collection will be released via King Shot Press, and the trailer for it can be seen below.
A Look At the Textured Cover of xTx’s “Today I Am A Book”
We’re admirers of the work done by the author known as xTx. We’ve published her short story “How to Deal With a Black Eye on Thanksgiving,” and her short novel Billie the Bull was one of our favorite books of 2013. So the news that Civil Coping Mechanisms would be releasing her next book, titled Today I Am A Book, early next year was welcome indeed. And now that book has a c0ver, and it’s got a deeply lived-in charm and style […]
Brooks Headley and Ian Svenonius Channel Cable Access and Talk Desserts
Brooks Headley: excellent pastry chef, excellent drummer. I interviewed him earlier this month about his terrific new cookbook, Brooks Headley’s Fancy Desserts. Now, there’s a book trailer for it, in which Ian Svenonius hosts one of the more surreal talk shows I’ve ever seen. The Eric Wareheim-directed trailer for Headley’s book can be seen below.
