I don’t care about Radiohead. I’m sorry to offend any superfans out there, but I just think they’re rehashing Dark Side of the Moon for my generation: music for people who want to like something “smart” but are afraid to really dig. With that said, I like the bands guitar player, Jonny Greenwood. I began to realize this around 2007, when he put together a collection of his favorite reggae and dub songs for Trojan Records 4oth anniversary, for the […]
Alex Ross Unveils New Book
If I had to choose my favorite music book of the last five years, I’d be really hard-pressed to find one I liked as much as The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century. So I was pretty excited yesterday, when Alex Ross posted over at his blog yesterday, that the follow-up, Listen To This, will be out in September on Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
“The Originator” Never Goes Out of Style/Ben Ratliff Appreciation
Yesterday we mentioned Mental Floss and their series of videos that explored the classic “Bo Diddley Beat“. While we totally appreciate the selections (yes, even the George Michael song), and anything Bo Diddley, we gotta point out that they sorta missed the boat on making mention of basically anything The Gories ever did, which is a shame. The Detroit band somehow took said guitar and drum beat originated by “The Originator”, and did something totally unique, and amazing with it. […]
Bites: The perfect H.P. Lovecraft gift, bad panels, Bukowski’s computer, Todd Barry, Thurston Moore, and more.
If you really want to know what I want for Hannukah, go over to Propnomicon and pick me up some gear from Miskatonic University. Because nothing says Jewish holiday like H.P. Lovecraft. (Thanks Jacket Copy) Lit. Maybe the worst name for a literary festival panel: “What book would you like to snuggle under covers with, and why?” Alice in Wonderland in the nude. (Thanks Boing Boing) Sooo, the 50 Cent “Self-help book”, The 50th Law, will quote “Malcolm X, Miles […]
Bites: Turdsworth, the man who makes Pekar tweet, The Twilight Sad, and more
Romantics get saucy! Lord Byron referred to William Wordsworth as “Turdsworth” in a letter. Now somebody can own that letter, and many others by the poet. Are we excited seeing trailers for the new Wes Anderson film, Fantastic Mr. Fox? Yes we are. Lit. Jeff Newelt: The man, the myth, the dude who tweets for Harvey Pekar. Nick Cave: “An aspirant solipsist” Starbucks saved a life, but how was the book? After all this zombie talk, it was finally time […]
