In our afternoon reading: an interview with Sunil Yapa, thoughts on Kate Zambreno’s latest, great very short fiction, and more.
Bands that sound like Yo La Tengo and Beach Fossils
Posted by Jason Diamond I wasn’t going to try and be clever with the title for this post, it simply is what it is: a band that sounds like Yo La Tengo and Beach Fossils. The Hairs are from Brooklyn, and the inspiration for their sound is so simple that it’s brilliant. There’s also hints of Belle & Sebastian turned up to ten (the organ reminds me of the group’s earlier work), and a bunch of other bands that released […]
Music Notes: Sunglasses, The Vaselines, Beach Fossils, and the Sounds of Summer
I’m sold on what Sunglasses are selling. I feel like I’m listening to the Good n’ Plenty choo choo train with Tobacco making the music. Their new EP (out on June 15th, Lefse Records is a little slice of awesome that we like so much, we’re giving away a copy of the limited edition hand sewn album over on our Twitter. Listen: Sunglasses – “Whiplash” The Vaselines are putting out a new album in September. I’m as shocked and pleased […]
Favorite Song Today, “Youth” by Beach Fossils
I fell pretty hard for Beach Fossils last year when I heard their first single. The newest offering by the Brooklyn band still reminds me of a jangly New Order, but also make me think I’m listening to the younger brother of Woods. Listen: Beach Fossils, “Youth”
Bites: Fancy Cocktails, Dick is Good for Divorce, German Publishers, Cheshire Cat as Math, Stephen Elliott at WORD, The Replacements, and More
Our favorite Bay Area bookstore takes a look at old cocktail books. Lit. Want a smooth divorce? Read Moby-Dick. At The Millions, Emily St. John Mandel talks about writing on trains. Designworklife takes a look at German book publisher, Zeixs. If Sarah Palin is coming to your local supermarket to sign books, please get rid of the tomatoes. N+1 discussion between conservative writers Ross Douthat and Reihan Salaam. Shakespeare characters write letters to Santa. Q: Why did Lewis Carroll add […]
Bites: Frank Portman’s playlist, Roger’s monograms, Michael Pollan, indie bookselling as football, and (maybe) one last mention of Inherent Vice .
Frank Portman, of one of my favorite pop-punk bands, Mr. T Experience, has a new book out called Andromeda Klein, and he gives Largehearted Boy a great playlist for Book Notes. N+1: Not so into zombies/alien films, but likes District 9. Indichik put up an MP3 of Beach Fossils last week. I forgot to mention it, but it’s well worth mentioning considering this guy is putting out some of the best stuff I’ve heard all year. New York Times Book […]
