Limes: Memphis mixed with Kiwi

Posted by Jason Diamond

Over at Impose, I wrote this thing about the collective obsession that the entire music nerd community has when it comes to “Kiwi Rock,” or more specifically anything released by the Flying Nun record label.

Memphis is another place that makes people with large record collections break away from their roles as jaded connoisseurs.  Stax, Big Star, and of course the Million Dollar Quartet are all staples of any American rock n’ roll diet, but it’s the bands like the Oblivians, anything Jay Reatard has been involved in, and the group known as Limes, which has helped push the Memphis Sound into the 21st century.

The interesting thing is that much like Jay Reatard’s last albums, Limes (which is mostly the brainchild of a guy named Shawn Cripps) retains the gritty feel that has been at the heart of most Memphis music for the last 50+ years, but sounds heavily influenced by bands New Zealand groups like Tall Dwarfs and The Chills.

So I guess this proves that all music meccas are linked somehow or another, and the new Limes album Tarantula pretty much proves that theory.  Listen to a track from the album here.
