Currents, an Interview Series with Brian Alan Ellis (Episode 46: Danger Slater)

Danger Slater

DANGER SLATER is the Wonderland Award-winning author of several books of horror and bizarro fiction, including Impossible James, Puppet Skin, He Digs a Hole, and I Will Rot Without You. If you wanna know what he’s up to, follow him on Twitter (@Danger_Slater) or just use Google or something.

My current favorite author is: whoever has been spray painting “Penis Girl” on the highway overpass near where I live.

My current favorite film is: Come to Daddy, starring Elijah Wood, directed by Ant Timpson. Weird as hell. Already watched it twice. Although I recently watched Whiplash, that drum movie starring some goofy looking kid and Juno’s dad. I thought it was gonna be stupid. Like, a drum movie? Really? Turned out to be really great though.

My current favorite television show is: Search Party on HBO Max.

My current favorite song is: “He Needs Me” performed by Shelley Duvall from the Popeye soundtrack.

My current state of mind is: strategically planning on when to go to the mailbox so I don’t have to say hi to any of my neighbors.

My current chemical romance involves: smoking weed back in March of last year and then binge-watching this garbage reality show on Netflix called The Circle, which was kinda like Survivor, except all through Facebook—so, like, everyone is isolated and they’re slowly going insane because of it, and they’re also narrating what they’re doing and thinking at all times because there’s no one else to talk to, and the whole time they’re playing it up for a camera because they know they’re on TV, but also trying to strategically “win the game” so they can get the money, but then they start developing these actual human connections with the people they’re catfishing while also being catfished themselves—and it was at some point during the fourth episode that I realized all art was pointless and that I was going to die someday. I literally cried for a week straight afterwards.

My current favorite phrase is: …I can’t even remember what I had for lunch yesterday, let alone a whole PHRASE.

My current mode of transportation is: hitching a ride like baby koala on the back of a very large woman.

My current favorite fast food item is: water.

My current workout routine consists of: nightly walks in the freezing cold… just to give myself a reason to leave the house.

My current regrettable decision involves: licking the locker room door handle at the gym.

My current hopes and dreams are: fame, fortune, etc.

My current projects include: filling out this questionnaire, but I might take a nap later, IDK.
