It’s December, apparently. Are we reading? We’re still reading. What are we reading? Books. Which books? Maybe some of these. The end of the year traditionally brings a very intriguing assortment of titles, and this year is no exception. Looking for strange, genre-defying work? We’ve got that, sure. Seeking sharply-written nonfiction? We’ve got that covered as well. Here are some December books that have caught our eye.
Our November book preview includes California travelogues, a thriller that hearkens back to the 1990s, folk horror, and a reconsideration of “Dawson’s Creek.”
And it’s October, home of colder weather, heated political talk, and a growing number of Halloween decorations. Awards season shortlists are growing; so too are lists of seasonally-appropriate scary books. (We’ve got a few of those here as well.) So here’s a look at some of the October books that have caught our attention.
And now we’re in the month of September. Hello, September. From our space, it seems like the summer is beginning to abate somewhat — or at least it’s moved out of the “brutally hot and humid” camp. So if you’re looking for books to bridge the gap between summer reads and something cozier, here are a couple of suggestions.
Apparently it’s August now. Apparently summer has turned the corner and is beginning its slow approach into autumn. Nominally these things are happening, but the passage of time has gotten a bit strange lately. Still, there are plenty of books, and that’s an excellent thing. Do you like powerful, resonant nonfiction? August has that covered. What about surreal, high-concept fiction? Also around. Here are a few of the books we’re most excited about that are due out this month.
Are we officially in summer reading season now? The summer of 2020 is a summer like few others, and the books due out this July line up with that very well. From surreal fiction to the secret history of boy bands to a tribute to an under-appreciated writer, the books we’re most excited about this month offer an abundance of ways in which to see the world.
So it’s June. We’ll be honest — this was unexpectedly delayed from earlier in the month and then delayed again. It’s an unsettling time out there, for so many reasons. Here are some books due out this month. We’re excited about them. Maybe you will be, too. Maybe you’ll find something in one of them to better understand the world; maybe you’ll find something in one of them to give you a moment of levity during a trying time.
What does May have in store for us, as far as books are concerned? A number of essay collections from some of our favorite writers, for one thing. Throw in some suspenseful novels, a welcome debut, and a book with an introduction from one of our favorite musicians and you have a combination for some terrific reading.
